Water Leak Repair
A leak you can't see is still running, so shut the main and have the line traced instead of waiting for it to appear somewhere.
When this becomes an emergency
- A ceiling stain that's noticeably bigger than it was last month.
- A damp, mildewy smell in a closet against a bathroom wall.
- The low-flow indicator on the meter turning with nothing running.
- Efflorescence or peeling paint low on a basement wall.
What a pro does
Finding a hidden leak is a process of elimination, not intuition. The plumber shuts the house down, reads the meter, then isolates sections to narrow which part of the system is losing water. Basements help a great deal here, because most supply runs are visible under the joists and can be followed by eye. What they hide is time: a slow weep onto a joist in a cold corner of an old Muskegon or Grand Haven house can carry on for a whole season before the smell reaches anybody. Material tells its own story. Pinholes in copper point at water chemistry or velocity and rarely arrive alone, while an old galvanized branch tends to have several weak points waiting their turn. Where a line crosses an exterior wall, a past freeze is often why it's weeping now. Once the section is exposed the plumber cuts back to sound pipe, makes the joints properly, and pressure tests the repair before anything gets closed up again.
